The Elms: Big Surprise – Dedication

In Music on January 30, 2011 at 11:10 am

Beautiful dedication today. Midwestern gospel rock band The Elms dedicated their 2001 album Big Surprise:

For Mamgu, Simon and all who show us that beautiful things still happen.

The Elms’ founders Owen Thomas (vocals, guitar) and Christopher Thomas (drums) came from a Welsh family in Indiana. Mamgu means “grandmother” in Welsh. It can also mean “amazing” or “the best ever” in Western slang. No idea who Simon is — comment if you know!

It’s About Time by Philip Paul – Dedication

In Music on January 25, 2011 at 11:55 am

Jazz drumming grandmaster Philip Paul recorded his solo CD “It’s About Time” after an impressive career performing with Lock-Jaw Davis, Hank Ballard, Buddy Johnson’s Big Bang and Count Basie’s saxophonist Frank Foster. Basie’s hit Shiny Stockings was named after Paul’s wife Juanita, who wore them to the Cotton Club where Foster and Paul performed.

Paul dedicated “It’s About Time:”

This CD is dedicated to my loving wife Juanita for 50 years of marital bliss. It is also dedicated to all of the wonderful musicians and friends who have helped me survive this monster called show business.”

Animal Dream by Barbara Kingsolver and Fragile by Sting ~ Dedication

In Books, Music, Novels on August 18, 2010 at 12:00 pm

Our last post about Barbara Kingsolver drew 46 hits in a single day, so here’s another gem from her.

Barbara dedicated Animal Dream ~

in memory of Ben Linder

American engineer Ben Linder died in Nicaragua during a 1987 Contra ambush.  While the U.S. CIA secretly supplied the Contras with weapons and training, people like Linder worked against them non-violently. Linder helped build power plants to promote local electricity. He also juggled and rode his unicycle through the villages encouraging children to get vaccinations. Contra fighters shot Ben and two Nicaraguans at point-blank range. Several members of Congress blamed him for putting himself in harm’s way and accused his mother of politicizing her grief when she tried to speak out about the secretive hypocritical policies. It’s a courageous tale and a great dedication for Kingsolver’s book. Read More

Sting also dedicated a song, called “Fragile,” to Ben Linder.
