Mysteries of Pittsburgh by Michael Chabon – Dedication

In Books, Mystery, Novels on July 21, 2010 at 8:13 am

The Mysteries of Pittsburgh opens with this dedication from Michael Chabon:

To Lollie

Lollie Groth, a poet and English professor, was Chabon’s first wife. Their story (falling in and out of love as Chabon’s career exploded) recalls Jason Robert Brown’s The Last Five Years.

Here’s Chabon’s essay about writing his first novel in the former bedroom of a man named Ralph.

Check out Mysteries of Pittsburgh ~ the character Phlox is some kind of firecracker.

Beat the Reaper by Josh Bazell – Dedication

In Books, Mystery, Novels on June 27, 2010 at 12:18 pm

Josh Bazell (a Columbia University graduate) dedicated his best-seller Beat the Reaper ~

In Memoriam

Stanley Tanz, MD

This is a fascinating dedication. Bazell’s book sweeps us into a macabre hospital to meet a doctor and a patient — one of whom may be a hitman. Bazell dedicated Beat the Reaper to Dr. Stanley Tanz who wrote extensively on “Pseudo-pseudohypoparathyroidism.” This illness is strikingly similar to pseudohypoparathyroidism. Here’s an article from one of Tanz’s patients.
