The Vanishing Hitchhiker: American Urban Legends and Their Meanings, by Jan Harold Brunvand – Dedication

In Adventure, Books, History & Culture, Psychology on November 16, 2010 at 12:00 pm

Sometimes, a book needs an awesomely special dedication — like JK Rowling’s shout out to fans in the final Harry Potter book.  Jan Harold Brunvand’s 1981 analysis of American urban legends had us guessing. Would she dedicate it to the butchered babysitter? the snake in the blanket? an infamous nude-surprise-party? Instead, she dedicated the book to young people (even the non-believers):

To my students

past and present

believers and skeptics alike

In Adventure, Books, Classics, Novels on November 13, 2010 at 10:54 am

William Golding dedicated his boys-gone-wild exploration Lord of the Flies:

Everything Is Going to Kill Everybody by Robert Brockway – Dedication

In Adventure, Books on July 29, 2010 at 6:35 pm

Continuing this week’s theme of deadly books with dramatically long titles, Robert Brockway dedicated his hilarious book Everything Is Going to Kill Everybody – The Terrifying Real Ways The World Wants You Dead ~

This book is dedicated to Meagan, who has had the

kindness and decency to not realize she’s way out of

my league for many years now. It should also be noted

that this entire book was her idea. Please direct

complaints accordingly.

Author Michael Largo said this of Brockway:

There has never been a hipper Prophet of Doom!

HaHa 🙂 The rest of Largo’s quote is grammatically confusing, but he has a great book too: God’s Lunatics >>

Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay by Michael Chabon – Dedication

In Adventure, Award-Winners, Books on July 20, 2010 at 11:57 am

Michael Chabon dedicated his Pulitzer Prizewinner The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay:

To my father.

Chabon’s mother raised him as a single parent. Years after he published Kavalier and Clay, Chabon said this about his dad:

‘My own father had always been an elusive figure in my life. My father-in-law, on the other hand, offered himself completely, without reservation.’

NPR has the complete story (with very harsh comments from readers, haha).
